Chapter 27

Quinn sat in a chair in her backyard that night, watching the light from the bottom of her pool reflect through the aqua-colored water. All the other lights were out, and she was wrapped in a warm blanket. Her eyes were tired, but her mind was racing. She thought back to the conversation she’d had with Raven. She had to work to stop gritting her teeth before she popped her earbuds in and dialed Andie.

“You’re still up?” asked Andie.

“How do you feel about drugs?” asked Quinn.

“How do I what?” asked Andie.

“Drugs. How do you feel about them?”

“What’s wrong? Are you - - - are you using again? What can I do for you? How can I help?” asked Andie.

Quinn shook her head. “No. I’m not using anything. I’m clean, Andie. We um...we never talked about this.”

Andie didn’t understand the nature of the question. In her mind, this conversation must have something to do with Quinn and Quinn’s past. “I know you’ve had struggles. I don’t judge you, Quinn. I won’t judge you.”

Quinn sighed. Andie’s first reaction was to comfort her. To soothe whatever might be ailing Quinn. That struck a chord with the brunette. She tried to fight against the pull of warmth in her belly at her lover’s care and concern.

“Why do you love me, Andie?” asked Quinn.

Andie sighed and thought for a moment. She answered, her voice soft and tender. “I just do. Something about you just….”

“Just what?”

“Quinn, you are so loving and sweet. There’s something about you that just fills me up.”

Quinn replied, “Sexually?”

“No, no that’s not what I mean.”

“What do you mean?”

Andie thought again. “You know that story about the marbles and the sand?”

“What?”

“Okay. Imagine you have a glass jar. Like a mason jar.”

“Okay, I have a mason jar.”

“And you fill that jar up with marbles.”

“Yes.”

“Now, do you think there’s any room left in the jar?”

Quinn frowned. “How could there be any room? It’s filled up with marbles, right?”

“Correct. It is filled with marbles.”

“So, no. It's filled with marbles. I fill you with marbles, Andie?” asked Quinn.

Andie smiled. “No, Sweetie. I’m not done yet.”

“Sorry.”

“The jar is filled with marbles. But now I pour in sand. Do you think there’s going to be room for the sand?” asked Andie.

“Well, I guess so. There are cracks and holes. Places the marbles don’t fit into. So yeah, there’s room.”

“Exactly. So is the jar full?” asked Andie.

Quinn nodded. “Yes, now it’s full.”

“What if I add water? Will it soak in or will it just bounce out of the jar?”

Quinn thought. “It should soak in, right? There’s still room. The water will just fill in the spaces between the grains of sand.”

“Yes! That’s it. That’s the story. And you can go on and on with air, and molecules, and atoms. But my point in all this, Quinn. You’re like the sand and the water for me. I thought I was doing okay. I was moving along just fine in life. You’ve come along and filled all these cracks and crevices that I never knew I had.
